Important Information for the Lecturers

1. PowerPoint presentations

Session rooms as well as some of the workshop rooms are equipped with a data/video projector (XGA, native resolution1024 x 768) and a desktop PC computer.
The PCs have Windows 2000, including PowerPoint 2002 (within Office XP) and WinZip - compression utility, installed. PowerPoint 2002 is compatible with all previous versions of PowerPoint.

  • Graphics and text in the presentation must be of adequate size to be clearly visible on the projected computer image from the back row of the auditorium. As a rule of thumb, if you can read the text at a distance of three metres on a 17" computer monitor it will be readable by the audience in a normal size auditorium.
  • A simple sans serif font, such as Helvetica or Arial, works best for slides. To ensure readability use large fonts (28 point Bold in titles; the lowest level of subtopic should be no smaller than 24 point)
  • Do not use ALL CAPITALS; bold text is preferable to underlined text
  • Use text colour with a high contrast to the background image, and use plain single-colour backgrounds. Dark blue or black are the best background colours.
  • Avoid using red and green next to each other. Avoid using bright, vibrant colours (red, gold, bright blue or bright green as background colours.

Presentation should be saved under the name of the speaker and the date of the presentation (not under Tampere / Finland or under the name of the conference).

Presentations should be sent in advance via e-mail (mailto:send.presentation@tampere-talo.fi) at the latest two business days before the opening day of the conference. The size of the attachment file should be less than 10 megabytes. Files bigger than10 megabytes can be sent by post.
In case you are not able to send the presentation via e-mail by the deadline, you can bring it with you to the conference on a CD-R / RW, floppy disk or zip cartridge. In this case, please contact the auditorium technicians / conference staff before the beginning of your session.

  • After we have received your presentation we will immediately check the compatibility of the presentation with our equipment and we will send you a confirmation at the latest the next business day.
  • The technicians will install your presentation on the PC of the auditorium before the session.
  • Presentation will be loaded by the conference staff and it will be ready to be projected on the screen when you arrive on stage.
  • All local copies of your presentation will be destroyed after the presentation.

Speakers presenting from their own personal laptops must have their laptop connected with the presentation equipment provided on the stage immediately prior to the start of their session. The conference staff connects the laptop with a 15-pin D plug into the dataprojector´s interface/switcher. Speakers are requested to ensure that they have a suitable connector in their laptop. Speakers should also be familiar with the keystrokes that activate the external display connector. Screen and/or power saving functions should be de-activated.

It is highly recommended, that you bring a backup copy of your presentation on a CD / zip / floppy disk even if you are going to use your own personal laptop in your presentation.

2. Video

The video tape players of the auditoriums support European (PAL) and US (NTSC) VHS formats. PAL S-VHS is also supported. Region free DVD-player is available on request.

3. 35 mm slide projection

The auditoriums as well as most of the workshop rooms are equipped with Kodak Carousel slide projectors with 80-slide trays. Double projection is available only on request.
Slide preview room is located in the lobby (Service Booth 3). Slide preview room staff will deliver the slide tray to the projectionist after you have arranged the slides in the tray. The projectionist will control the projector during the presentation. After your presentation you may collect your slides from the slide preview room.

  • As a rule-of-thumb, if you can read a 35-mm slide when held at arm's length in front of you, it will be readable by the audience in a normal-size room. Follow the guidelines for PowerPoint-slides.
  • Avoid cardboard mounts. Cardboard mounts or thin plastic glassless mounts will cause the projector to jam
  • Slides mounted without glass can be damaged in the heat of the high power projectors. If not glass-mounted, slides tend to warp, changing the focus point as they heat
  • Do not affix tape of any kind to your slides because this will cause the projector to jam.

4. Overhead projection

The auditoriums and workshop roomes are equipped with overhead projectors. Blank OHP transparencies and pens are available. Suggested fonts for overhead transparencies are

  • title: 36 Points Helvetica Bold
  • text: 24 Points Helvetica regular
